[Urdu Couplet #08]
कि जहाँ सब कहें विसाल हुआ
Hijr ki zindagi se maut bhali
ki jahan sab kahen visaal hua
हिज्रकी (Hijr) = separation from the beloved; मौत (maut) = death; विसाल (visaal) = union (related to the lovers)
[English Meaning]
Rather than the life of separation (from my beloved) death is better
Where everyone says the union (with the beloved) happened
Shaikh Zahuruddin Hatim, known by the pen name Shah Hatim, was a Dehlvi poet working as a Sepoy. He wrote two Deewans (collection of poetry). He was a very cultured person who worked towards improving the Urdu language, hence considered as one of the key literary personalities. The great poet Mirza Soda was one of his disciples. The prime themes in his poetry (or ghazals) were romance and self-reflection.
